ARTIST OF THE WEEK – SARA ANDREASSON

Swedish illustrator Sara Andreasson’s work has been making quite a splash in the art world over the past few years. However, behind the bright palettes and bold characters lies an inspiring story to success.
In a previous life, Sara spent six years of hard grind on a product design and engineering degree, focusing her talents in furniture design. In discovering she needed a more creative outlet, she risked it all and dropped from the course to focus on her first love; illustration.
With a rediscovered confidence for the work she cared about, Sara’s creative output exploded, and through publishing her art through Instagram and Tumblr pages she quickly caught the eye of a number of prominent design blogs and magazines. Nowadays, she divides her time between high-profile commissions, personal projects and editing an art zine called BBY – a publication focused on prominent female creatives within the art and design world. A life decision well made.
Sara’s work has strong feminist undertones and a sense of societal commentary that is always handled with a playful touch. Fill your eyeballs below.
“My style, I think, is a combination of joy and restlessness. I don’t give it too much thought; I just draw because I need to do it. For me, the most important thing is equality, and feminism and norm-criticism are my main themes no matter what I do. I try to use the space that I have been given to convey my point of view, but I think it is more obvious in some pieces than others. The best thing about illustration is the possibility to present something different than what we see on a day-to-day basis. Images are so powerful in that sense.” – Sara Andreasson.
